Here’s a nice idea from the Turkish: make your own yogurt. With UHT milk, this literally takes 1 minute and you don’t need any equipment besides a spoon (and maybe an oven).
Step 1: when your yogurt container gets low, pour UHT milk in.
Step 2. Give it a good shake, cover, leave it in a somewhat warm location and wait 12 hours.
Step 3: Eat your yogurt.
We actually have a substantial advantage in yogurt-making in Switzerland because UHT milk is so widely available. As it’s already sterilized, you can skip the usual sterilization step, which means you don’t need to transfer the milk into a pot and then into another container. It is so beautifully simple I knew we had to do it.
Lo and behold, the yogurt that comes out is creamy, fresh and tastes even better when you know that you’re saving money with each bite!

Cost for 1 kg of yogurt from the store: 3.20
Cost of raw ingredients (1L of milk – 2 spoons of yogurt negligible): 1.10
Savings: 65%!
I don’t know if this needs to be said but: use normal yogurt, not the small sweetened yogurt cups that dominate the shelves. Those are actually desserts, not as food for your day-to-day meals. They contain loads of sugar and aren’t healthy for consumption. In our house, their major function is to make popsicles.
